From Cruelty to Compassion: How One Puppy Sparked a Movement

Some stories are difficult to tell—but they must be told.

Phoebe was just a young puppy when she endured unimaginable cruelty. When she was finally rescued, X-rays revealed fractures throughout her tiny body—from her head to her tail. She had been hung from a tree by her jaw, tethered, stoned, and beaten. In a final act of violence, she was doused in methylated spirits and set alight.

Her cries were heard by a local woman, who intervened and rushed Phoebe to a nearby veterinarian. There, she was stabilised before being flown to South Africa for the critical surgeries that would save her life.

Despite the trauma, Phoebe’s spirit remained unbroken. Unable to move due to her injuries, she still greeted visitors with small squeals of joy. Her resilience was remarkable—but her story raised a deeper, more troubling question: what circumstances lead children to commit such acts of violence?

The answer revealed a complex and painful reality. Phoebe’s abuse was carried out by three young children—aged just 6, 8, and 12—acting under the instruction of their father. He believed the puppy had cursed a newborn in the family and ordered the children to torture her over several days.

Phoebe’s story became a turning point.

In response, the Cactus Animal Shelter & Children’s Education Centre was founded in Lusaka, Zambia. What began as a rescue effort grew into something far more ambitious: a place not only to save animals, but to address the root causes of cruelty.

Today, the Centre provides a safe haven for vulnerable animals—rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming those in need. Just as importantly, it serves as a space where children can learn about empathy, compassion, and the sentience of animals. By fostering emotional awareness at a young age, the Centre works to break cycles of violence before they begin.

Phoebe’s story is not an isolated case. Across communities, animals continue to suffer in silence. But her story also shows what is possible when compassion meets action.
